doubts

this is supposed to be one of the most stressful times in my life, but...

Life is good, and I'm a bit eager to see how things unfold in the coming weeks. A lot of needed changes are taking place - professionally and personally. I guess the main thing on my mind is wrapping up things at my current job while trying to maintain enough grace/charm/composure to land the "right" next job -- my aspiration is to get an agency role in PR. Some changes have elicited feelings of relief yet at the same time when I tend to think very hard about the future, anxiety emerges.

Luckily, yesterday's kickoff to the holiday weekend provided some respite from the anxiety. Had a very lovely (and rich) lunch with Ben and Jezz over at Artisanal to bid adieu to my favorite intern and send him off in a way befitting. One REALLY good glass of wine and tons of cheese later, and all I wanted to do was nap.... which I did... until I had to get ready to meet up with la familia downtown.

Not since Christmas, had we gathered the East Coast faction of the family together, and it was such a nice experience. Tita Rosemarie is in town for the week to spend time with Chip, Pinky, and Miles. She treated us, including Val and Joseph, to yet another fantastic meal at Paprika (my former lunchmate, Lucy, introduced me to the spot) -- starting with a caprese insalata, mussels, red wine, topped off with some mighty fine non-traditional pasta dishes like fettucine with a light cream sauce, shrimp, asparagus, and grapes (?), lobster ravioli, gnocchi. We then headed over to Veniero's for dessert -- a first for Pinky, Tita Rosemarie, and Val. Miles was one happy almost-three-year-old, jumping around all over the joint, futzing with a security code to a private room, and knocking over stantions. Smart thing that his mommy ordered him sugar-free cookies for dessert!

The rain started up again in the evening, I headed home, had a nice phone chat with Mom, Dad, and Derek (who's recovering back home in Cali), and felt so relaxed (a serene kind of happiness). I'm sure the anxiety about not knowing when and where my next job will be will return shortly, but at least I know that there are people out there who love and believe in me. And with folks like that in your corner, it makes life's challenges - big or small - a heckuva lot easier to handle.

Fingers crossed!

a not-so-lazy sunday

Had yet another lovely weekend (which made up for a horrible week)... Dinner with V in our old neighborhood, then an oddly interesting yet lengthy indie flick with Michael on Friday, and continuing Saturday for breakfast followed by a relaxing walk along the Hudson River (116th Street down to 56th St - Pier 94 - we were pretty impressed!), checked out the NY Culinary Festival alongside the city's foodie crowd, and caught a show at the PIT. Today, I met up with JMac at the driving range and whacked away through a couple of buckets of golf balls until a brief thunderstorm arrived, did some shopping a la Target, treated him to belated bday drinks and a chat over how much we've all changed since college (how much we haven't), then went along on our separate merry ways -- me to do the Sunday roomie dinner and laundry, with Sio quite pleased with the miraculous casa cleaning by our male counterpart, Mig. No Grey's Anatomy nor West Wing tonight (v. sad - guess I'll have to wait till Entourage returns!).

As I was driving around the City College campus in search of a parking spot for Sio's purple car, I noticed how pretty this one particular building was (not sure what it's called, just know it's next to Goethals), so I took the pic below with my camera phone.

Ugh, is tomorrow really Monday????!!!! Hoping to get some good news (or any news) on a particular career development... Fingers crossed!

what a friggin' week...

What a week it's been... Good, bad, and just downright stressful.

Starting last Friday, May 5th until now, it's been action-packed here. May 5th was not only my mom's bday and Cinco de Mayo, but I ended up enduring a 14-inning Mets vs. Braves game with Michael... Good game, but at the end of a work week - that was rough! Next day was Sach's bday dinner. Spent Sunday first having brunch with Su at one of my favorite spots in the Upper West, Cafe con Leche, then hitting the theater with V to catch MI:3. Sio was sweet enough to cook her roommate a nice dinner before we settled into Sunday viewing mode (West Wing, DH, and Grey's). All in all, it was a really nice weekend. And then...

During the middle of Grey's, my phone rings. My dad calling to let me know that my brother got injured during a bombing in Ramadi, Iraq. Suffice it to say, I was no longer interested in watching my beloved Grey's at that moment. Luckily, Sio and Mig were home as my emotions went from happy and content to anxious and devastated. We didn't really know what was going on, and all we knew was that there was an attack of some sort, that D was hurt in the chest and legs. Since it was my mom's bday, my dad, Aunt Aida, and Uncle Jun had gone to Palm Springs for the weekend, only to come back on Sunday to get word that the police was looking for them to break the news about D. No one in my family got any sleep that night. It was horrible. Then lo and behold, Lisa called me from CA to tell me that my brother had emailed her (she called me around 2 or 3am on Monday so I was a bit bleary). I couldn't believe it, but when I checked my email a few hours later, there it was... word from Derek telling me what we had already known, along with a request to keep it quiet from my folks until he gets to a hospital in Germany (too late for that, buddy). Net/net, it looks like he's in a wheelchair at the moment but is well enough to travel back to the States this Sunday to recuperate. :-)

More back and forth, then some stressful moments on the parental and work fronts (good news for my lunch buddy, Lucy, that she got a new gig!), and at this particular point in time, I'm just emotionally EXHAUSTED and THANKFUL that he's fine. A couple of positive developments are coming along career-wise, so keeping my fingers crossed for that along with the hope for yet another lovely weekend ahead!

champion idealist

Apparently, that's what this personality test says that I am... A Champion Idealist - eNFp - (better sounding than a "champion chump" - ha ha) is the trait found in 3% of the population. I guess the description below does kinda sorta sound like me???

General: ENFPs are both "idea"-people and "people"-people, who see everyone and everything as part of an often bizarre cosmic whole. They want to both help (at least, their own definition of "help") and be liked and admired by other people, on bo th an individual and a humanitarian level. They are interested in new ideas on principle, but ultimately discard most of them for one reason or another.

The Champion Idealists are abstract in thought and speech, cooperative in accomplishing their aims, and informative and extraverted when relating with others. For Champions, nothing occurs which does not have some deep ethical significance, and this, coupled with their uncanny sense of the motivations of others, gives them a talent for seeing life as an exciting drama, pregnant with possibilities for both good and evil. This type is found in only about 3 percent of the general population, but they have great influence because of their extraordinary impact on others. Champions are inclined to go everywhere and look into everything that has to do with the advance of good and the retreat of evil in the world. They can't bear to miss out on what is going on around them; they must experience, first hand, all the significant social events that affect our lives. And then they are eager to relate the stories they've uncovered, hoping to disclose the "truth" of people and issues, and to advocate causes. This strong drive to unveil current events can make them tireless in conversing with others, like fountains that bubble and splash, spilling over their own words to get it all out.

Champions consider intense emotional experiences as being vital to a full life, although they can never quite shake the feeling that a part of themselves is split off, uninvolved in the experience. Thus, while they strive for emotional congruency, they often see themselves in some danger of losing touch with their real feelings, which Champions possess in a wide range and variety. In the same vein, Champions strive toward a kind of spontaneous personal authenticity, and this intention always to "be themselves" is usually communicated nonverbally to others, who find it quite attractive. All too often, however, Champions fall short in their efforts to be authentic, and they tend to heap coals of fire on themselves, berating themselves for the slightest self-conscious role-playing.
